Rainy weather, dropping temperatures, lack of sun. With weather changing and days getting shorter, positive attitude seems to fly away. Some of us could happily fall into winter sleep and wake up for spring. How to prevent the winter blues and not let the negative feelings get you? I’m sharing some of my tips for that. Read on to find out.
CHASE THE LIGHT
It is above all the lack in natural light that leaves us feeling sleepy and dull. The key here is that when the sun makes an appearance, seek the rays, by opening your blinds, get outside and feel the sun on your face. I love to cover all up on a cozy blanket and enjoy the sunshine on a sunny day, going for a drive or just sitting on the window ledge. If that’s not enough for you, consider one of those light boxes which simulate sunlight. You’ll feel more energetic within no time!
GET ENOUGH SLEEP
You might have heard a million times that adequate sleep is critical for mental and physical health. Getting enough undisturbed sleep is vital for fighting off winter tiredness. Fact is, the average adult needs a minimum of seven hours of sleep a night. But beware, if you sleep too much, chances are you’ll feel even more sluggish during the day. Also, try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day.
TAKE YOUR VITAMINS
I’m not a big fan of taking food additives, and not just because I forget to take them anyway. But it’s something my mother kept reminding me of, without any luck getting me to take any vitamins. However, I recently went to get some blood samples taken and tadaaa, my vitamin D level was below average, which made me realise that my common winter ailments could be caused by vitamin and mineral deficiencies. And the lack of sunshine during winter can indeed be bad news for the D deficient since the essential vitamin is only absorbed when the body is exposed to sunlight.Without vitamin D, the body can’t absorb calcium or stimulate certain immune responses that protect us from colds and infections. That’s why topping up your vitamin stock can put a spring back in your winter mechanism.
LET SPRING INDOORS
I’ve always found green plants get me through winter. And though I’m not blessed with a green thumb, which mostly results in flowers and plants dying much sooner than at most other people’s houses, I love to bring in some fresh oxygen through flowers, even all through winter. It’s like Spring come early.
